Corning Gorilla Glass 3 _visualize in 3d

Question:  What is Gorilla Glass?

Answer:    Gorilla Glass is the registered trademark for an alkali-alumino silicate sheet toughened glass manufactured by U.S. glassmaker Corning Inc .

Engineered for a combination of thinness, lightness, and damage-resistance, it is used primarily as the cover glass for portable electronic devices including mobile phones, portable media players, laptop computer displays, and some television screens.

It is manufactured through immersion in a molten alkaline salt bath using ion exchange to produce compressive residual stress at the surface. This prevents cracks from propagating – for a crack to start, it will first have to overcome this compressive stress.

Question:  How Is it Made?

Answer:    During its manufacture, Gorilla Glass is toughened by ion exchange. The material is submersed in molten potassium salt at a temperature of approximately 400 °C (750 °F), whereby smaller sodium ions leave the glass to be replaced by larger potassium ions from the salt bath.

The larger ions occupy more space and are pressed together when the glass cools, causing potassium ions to diffuse far into the surface, thereby creating a 'surface' layer of high compressive stress deep into the glass, a layer more resistant to damage from everyday use.

Question: What are the speciality of this Glass?

Answer:  Gorilla Glass 3 is not only chemically strengthened — its atomic configuration is formulated so that the glass is more durable. Corning Gorilla Glass 3  comes with Native Damage Resistance (NDR) is fundamentally tougher and more damage resistant even before chemical strengthening.                                              Gorilla Glass 3 with NDR enables improved damage resistance and toughness compared to former glass compositions and is up to three times more damage resistant than Gorilla Glass 2. This type of Native Damage Resistance is a unique feature of Gorilla Glass 3.
Question:  What are the Advantages of this Glass?
Answer:  Corning  Gorilla  Glass provides outstanding performance and durability, with distinct advantages over other materials.
DAMAGE RESISTANCE: Gorilla Glass is chemically strengthened through an ion-exchange process that creates a deep compression layer on the surface of the glass substrate. This layer acts as “armor” to reduce the introduction of flaws.
THINNER FORM FACTOR: Depending on application and manufacturer specifications, Gorilla Glass can be produced in thicknesses ranging from 0.4 mm to 2 mm. Even at 0.4 mm, Gorilla Glass retains a performance advantage over many other cover materials.
OUTSTANDING SURFACE QUALITY: Corning’s proprietary fusion process gives Gorilla Glass the same superior surface as all of our high technology display substrates. This extraordinarily precise, highly automated process produces glass with exceptionally clean, smooth, flat surfaces and outstanding optical clarity.
COMPATIBILITY WITH TOUCH SCREENS: Gorilla Glass is an ideal cover sheet for touch screens. It’s tough enough to handle the surface pressures intrinsic to these devices, and exceptionally thin to enable more sensitive and accurate responses.
Gorilla Glass is thin – from .4 mm to 2 mm – and therefore lightweight and also damage resistant. Add in scratch-resistance, advanced touch capabilities and superior surface quality and you have a recipe for brilliant, breakthrough possibilities.
Question:  What are the applications of the Gorilla Glass?
Answer:    With more and more applications employing sleek design, along with transparency, touch and durability, it’s clear that Corning Gorilla Glass offers a new design paradigm.
Gorilla Glass is an ideal cover glass for the most innovative electronic devices, from smartphones to slates to PCs. Many companies have not only integrated Gorilla Glass, but designed for it. Look for Corning Gorilla Glass on over 33 major brands, 2,450 product models and 2.7 billion devices worldwide.

1. SmartPhones:
Consumers are demanding more from their mobile phones. They want devices that are thinner, lighter, and aesthetically pleasing – but also durable enough to resist the abuses that come with mobility.
And they want scratch resistance and advanced touch capability that puts the world at their fingertips. Visually stunning, incredibly tough Gorilla Glass enables today’s sleekest smartphone designs, while providing exceptional damage resistance to the scratches and bumps of everyday use.
2. Slate/Tablets:
Slates and tablets are one of the fastest-growing segments ever in consumer electronics, combining the portability of mobile phones with the sophisticated capability of a PC, in a streamlined device. Gorilla Glass is amazingly thin and lightweight to enable today’s sleek slate and tablet designs. It features exceptional durability to help protect screens from the scratches and bumps of everyday use. And it is sensitive enough for today’s most advanced touch applications.
3.  NoteBooks and Large cover Glass:
Gorilla Glass is ideal for interactive displays, digital signage and markerboards. It’s tough and so thin it enables more sensitive and accurate response. It allows customers to create lighter weight displays that are visually stunning and optically clear. Gorilla Glass also helps reduce the issue of parallax, which allows for a more precise touch surface for interaction and viewing, especially at wide viewing angles.
4. Interior Architecture:

With Corning Gorilla Glass, your design freedoms are greater than you think. Remarkably tough and incredibly thin, Corning Gorilla Glass enables progressive new lightweight designs with superior optical performance for interior architecture.

5. Marker Boards:

Corning Gorilla Glass is a durable cover glass solution widely used in over 2.7 billion consumer electronic devices. Today, Corning is working with designers and manufacturers, such as  Egan, Krystal and Moore Co, to apply the features and benefits of Gorilla Glass to markerboard applications.

Markerboard designers and manufacturers are looking for a lightweight, optically-clear surface to enable dry erase solutions that can retain a modern aesthetic appeal and offer design flexibility. The use of Corning Gorilla Glass for markerboards applications aims to satisfy these needs and address the premium markerboard industry.
